5. Both the photo-electric effect and Compton scattering covered in Chapter 3 assume that the electrons in the target material are initially at rest. Let's assume that the target is made out of aluminum. A) According to Wikipedia, the diameter of an aluminum atom is 143 picometers. What is a reasonable estimate of the minimum speed of an electron bound inside this atom? Hint: Use Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle. B) Valence electrons carry the current in wires. They are free to move from atom to atom. Hence they are not confined to atomic dimensions. Their speed is generally determined by the temperature of the aluminum. Boltzmann's theory says that the average kinetic energy is given by: K=KT where KT = eV at room temperature and k is Boltzman's constant. Assuming that our aluminum is at room temperature, what is the average speed of a valence electron? C) What is the kinetic energy of the electron in parts A and B? Is it justified to treat the electron at rest in the photoelectric effect and in Compton scattering? Explain. K=KT
