5. Astronomy Career Development and Professional Ethics (16 points): You give a presentation to a middle school class about black holes. Afterwards, one of the students comes to you and says “I want to be an astronomer like you one day--can you give me any advice about what I should do to become one?” a. Based on your personal experience, write at least ten sentences with advice that you would like to pass on to younger students who are considering careers in astronomy. Extra Credit if your advice addresses aspects of racism (or sexism or other types of discrimination), mental health, identity, and/or colonialism in astronomy. b. Would you agree that the student is correct to characterize you as an astronomer? Explain why or why not. Side note: doing outreach (such as the options on the astronomy department's website) is a powerful antidote to imposter syndrome.
