We all know that the variety and succession of arthropod fauna
at a corpse can be used to determine the approximate time of death,
as well as some other relevant information, in a homicide
investigation. You have just been called by the county
coroner’s office to come to the scene of a possible murder.
The body of a young girl has been found in an open ditch in an
advanced state of decay (bloated?). It is April and has been
relatively cool and rainy for the past week, but warm (72F) and
sunny before that. What types of equipment will you
need? Describe the various procedures you will attempt at the
site of the body and in the laboratory. What types of species
and life stages do you expect to find and what will they “tell”
you? How might your investigation differ if it was
August? December? If the body was found in Lake
Thunderbird?
