2) The reduction of carbon dioxide emissions is an important problem for engineers. In the last exam, we looked at carbon sequestration technology into liquids. In this problem, we look at the supply side (i.e. things that produce carbon dioxide. Turbines typically rely on boilers to generate the steam for turning the blades, which in turn generates power. These boilers are often fueled by coal, which of course generates a large quantity of carbon dioxide emissions. One strategy that has been suggested is to increase the pressure of the output steam from a turbine, and use that to generate hot water for homes. This way, a separate coal-fired boiler is not required for domestic hot water. a) The turbine has steam entering at a temperature of 350 deg C at a pressure of 0.85 MPa, and has a flowrate of 100,000 kg/hr. If the output stream has a temperature of 80 deg C at a pressure of 45 kPa, how much power is developed by the turbine? (20 points] b) The turbine output stream (from part a) will now be used to heat water up from 25 deg Cat 1 atm to 40 deg C at 1 atm flowing at a rate of 500,000 kg/hr. Assuming that the pressure of the turbine output does not change, what is the final temperature of that stream to accomplish this heating? [20 points)
