Dispersion in fiber optics: (20 pts) Consider the fiber optic shown in cross-section below. Light is incident on the flat end of the optic. Sketch the path of the shown ray of light as it travels through the fiber assuming: A: (5 pts) The light is monochromatic (a single color). B: (5 pts) The light is a mix of red and blue components. C: (5 pts) A common application for fiber optics is to transmit information as short pulses of light How might the dispersion you observe in part B impact the use of fiber optics to transmit information in this way? What strategies could mitigate these impacts? D: (5 pts) We also saw in class how images can be transmitted through fiber. When would the dispersion you observe in part B impact the use of fiber optics to transmit images? What strategies could mitigate these impacts? I include several copies of the blank figure on this and the following page. You may draw your answers to parts A-B directly on the exam packet - just pull off the pages you use and stick them in between pages of your exam book.
