Chapter 12 Tropical Storms and Hurricanes In this chapter we focus on the temporal and spatial characteristics of tropical systems, how they develop, and the destruction that they cause. In the north Atlantic and east Pacific tropical cyclones are known as hurricanes; in the west Pacific they are referred to as typhoons; and, in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean basins they are simply known as cyclones. Figure 1. A high definition camera outside the International Space Station captured a view of Hurricane Florence on Sept. 12, 2018. Florence churned across the Atlantic in a west- northwesterly direction with winds of 130 miles an

hour. The chapter begins with a discussion of why hurricanes do not make landfall on California's coast: a phenomenon known as "trade wind inversion" where subsiding air, on the east side of ocean basins, inhibits vertical cloud growth and, because of the ocean currents, cool, moist air remains relatively close to the surface. We generally refer to this commonly-occurring inversion as the "marine layer" and it is a characteristic of mid-latitude west coasts of each continents. Though California is, for the most part, immune to these tremendously powerful and potentially destructive storm systems, they remain very interesting to study. As you read the chapter and view the powerpoint slides, focus on the following terms and concepts (and do not forget to complete the homework assignment below): Hurricane, typhoon, cyclone; spatial and temporal characteristics Conditions that contribute to the development of tropical depressions Easterly wave Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale Unit 12 Homework The list, below, consist of characteristics that are common to either a midlatitude cyclone, or a tropical cyclone, or both (midlatitude and tropical cyclones). For each feature, enter either "midlatitude", "tropical", or "both" as appropriate. Upload your answers onto the "Chapter 12 answer upload" under the Chapter 12 module in Canvas. The assignment is due by 11:10 AM, Wednesday, May 18, 2022. 1. Counterclockwise rotation 2. Cold front 3. Warm sea surface temperatures 4. Easterly wave 5. Divergence aloft 6. Ascending air 7. Warm front 8. Low atmospheric pressure at the surface
