Your answer should consider the following factors: increasing global population and agricultural demands anthropogenic and industrial contamination of water resources distribution of water resources and main consumers political factors and geographical boundaries physical water scarcity [10 marks] d) A river with 500 mg/L of total suspended solids (a conservative substance) and an upstream flow of 2000 m/min receives an agricultural discharge of 24000 m/h carrying 1820 ppm of total suspended solids. The suspended solids quickly become uniformly distributed in the river. A municipality just downstream withdraws water and mixes it with enough pure water (no solids) from another source to deliver water having no more than 180 ppm solids to its customers. i. What is the concentration of suspended solids of the river before mixing with the pure water stream? ii. What should the ratio of pure water to river water be to achieve 180 ppm solids?
