The 16S rRNA is not an mRNA but rather is a catalytic RNA that is a functional component of prokaryotic ribosomes. Would the genome annotation approach you used during the genome annotation lab (ORF Finder, CD search, etc.) have worked to identify a 16S ribosomal RNA gene? or why not?
