Question 1 Answer all parts. (a) Predict the structures of platinum-containing products A and B in the following reactions and explain your answers: (i) [Pt(PR3)4]2+ + Cl → A (ii) A+CE B [4 marks] (b) The complex [Fe(SCN)(H20)s]2+ was detected as an intermediate of the reaction between [Co(NH3)(NCS)]2+ and [Fe(H20)6]2+ in water, which ultimately produces [Fe(H20)6]3+ and [Co(H20).]?*. What kind of reaction occurs? Propose the mechanism of this reaction by writing the reaction steps involved. [4 marks] (c) Aqueous solutions of Co2+ salts are pale pink. They contain the complex ion [Co(H2O)]2+. Addition of concentrated HCl results in a profound colour change to dark blue, due to formation of [CoC14)?-. The main absorption bands of [Co(H20).]2+ and [CoC14]? occur at 19400 cm-- (E-10 Mcm) and 14700 cm' (€ - 1000 Mcm), respectively. (i) Explain the difference in the transition energies between the two complexes. [3 marks] (ii) Explain why the absorption band of [CoCL]?- is much more intense than that of [Co(H20)6] + [3 marks] (d) Calculate the ligand field stabilisation energy of the following complexes: (1) [Mn(H20).]2+ (ii) [Fe(CN)6] (iii) (CoC14]2- [6 marks]
