Problem 4 Assuming a standard free energy change of 30.5 kJ mol for the synthesis of ATP from ADP and P, how many molecules of ATP could theoretically be produced by the catabolism of glucose to lactate (AG"=-196 kJ mol-1), assuming 33% efficiency? How many molecules of ATP could theoretically be produced by the catabolism of glucose to CO2 (AG" = -2850 kJ mol-1), assuming 33% efficiency? Does this explain the Pasteur effect (the observation, first made by Louis Pasteur, that glucose consumption in yeast dramatically decreases in the presence of oxygen)?
