R w T M T2 mi h ] m2 A modified "Atwood's machine" consists of 2 masses attached by a massless rope and a pulley that can be treated as a hoop, as shown above (ignore the spokes on the pulley, they can be treated as massless). The system is released from rest and the 2 masses accelerate in unison as the pulley rotates without slipping. Note that the pulley's mass cannot be neglected and that the tension is different on either side of the pulley due to a small amount of static friction, such that T1 # T2.
