Once you have taken some notes on these topics, use your own curiosity to explore what is happening in this exciting activity at various research centers around the world. On interesting site is run by the IBM Corporation but you should be able to find many others. The IBM site requires you to set up an account but there is no charge to do this. Once you have explored some of these resources prepare a report of 4-5 pages in length on your findings about quantum computing and how you might use it to solve real problems. The IBM site even allows you to submit a computing task to their 'quantum computer'. You are not required to do this but you should at least try to understand how it would be done and as best you can understand, what it would mean to carry out such a computation. A few things you should include: • A description of the actual hardware that is being developed at IBM and elsewhere. • Some specific problems that are predicted to have solutions only obtainable using a quantum computer • Your own speculation on where you think this entire enterprise is going in the next ten years or SO. Prepare the report and submit as a single pdf file. Please email me with any questions you might have if I have left anything unclear.

For your final project in PEP554 you will engage in a brief study of the concepts behind quantum computing. Background: This semester we have explored a number of concepts that are unique to quantum mechanics. Included are the concept of quantum measurement, quantum entanglement and the possibility to uniquely test the predictions of quantum mechanics through the Bell inequalities. To see how these concepts have lead to the ideas behind quantum computing take the following steps. Read articles on the basics of quantum computing. The Wikipedia article is a good starting point but is not the only one so if you already have some familiarity with the subject through another source, by all means use that. As you read try to get a glimpse of the following key concepts: • Distinction between "classical" and "quantum" computing • What are some of the ideas for constructing a quantum computer • What are some of the advantages that a quantum computer might offer vs a classical computer
