A manufacturer wants to produce chemical “R” based on the gas
phase reaction A → R + S, by feeding pure “A” into a CSTR. The
manufacturer hires consultancy services to obtain information from
two companies using the same reaction with some variants, shown as
follows, Company Design features D E Reactor PFR Batch Temperature,
°C [0.41] As PFR Pressure, atm 1 1 Volume, L 500 Conversion of A
0.8 0.8 Downtime, h 1 The batch reactor operates at constant volume
The manufacturer wants to use a CSTR, with the following
conditions: Volume of CSTR: equals to the volume of the batch
reactor in company E. Molar flow rate of feed: 0.2 mol min-1
Reaction order: 2 Temperature: 200 °C Pressure: 1 atm Activation
energy: 2500 cal mol-1 Answer the following questions: Q1.1. How
would you organise concepts, assumptions and/or other information
to logically develop, and show, the stepwise process to obtain the
kinetic expression, rA, for the reaction in the PFR? [1 mark] Q1.2.
Calculate the initial concentration, CA0 in mol L-1, for the PFR.
[1 mark] Q1.3. Calculate the kinetic constant, k, at [110] °C. [1
mark] Q1.4. What would be the effect of changing conversion values,
XA, on the kinetic constant, k? (50 words maximum). [1 mark] Q1.5.
Calculate the reaction time, in minutes, for the batch. [1 mark]
Q1.6. Calculate total time of a batch cycle in minutes. [1 mark]
Q1.7. What strategies would you recommend to shortening the total
time of a batch cycle? (50 words maximum). [1 mark] Q1.8. Calculate
the volume of the batch reactor, in litres. [1 mark] Q1.9.
Calculate k for the CSTR. [1 mark] Q1.10.Calculate conversion of A,
XA, in the CSTR.
