A 70%-30% zinc brass pipe fitting was used to join pure copper piping in potable water service. After five years of service, the fitting began to leak. The exterior of the fitting appeared normal, but the interior of the fitting was a red color rather than the normal gold color on the outside of the fitting. • What type of corrosion is likely to have occurred? • Should a metal with lower corrosion rate than 70% copper-30% zinc brass, measured by weight loss, be substituted for the brass fitting? What would happen if the entire piping system were made from brass?
