In several countries, biodiesel is produced from soybean oil.
The oil first needs to be extracted from soybeans
using the steady state process shown in Figure 3 below.
c. Identify all streams containing protein. (This is actually the
most valuable material in this process.)
d. Calculate the total flow rate of stream 2, in kg/h.
e. Calculate the flow rate of oil in stream 2 and in stream 6 (in
kg/h) and give the percentage oil recovery
for this process.
f. Calculate the flow rate of stream 5.
g. It is further known that i) the oil recovery unit recovers only
90% of the oil in stream 3, and ii) that
the lean stream (4) is 95% hexane. Express this information
mathematically.
h. Check your results by doing an oil balance over the oil
extractor.
