Pier B is going to be constructed to allow the loading and unloading of cargo ships. The pier is 105 m x 135 m and will be supported on pile foundations. Live + dead loads of the pier are approximately 45 kPa. Figure 1 shows a plan view of the pier with the proposed pile layout. There will be 19 rows of piles, so each row will be 7.5 m on center. Figure 2 shows an elevation including the soil profile beneath the pier. The piles are 0.45 m square, reinforced concrete piles. 135 m ko 0 -0 0 5 -0 -0 - o 0 o 0 01 Pile Row 105 m Figure 1: Plan view of Pier showing centerline of each row of piles 1) What is the design load on a typical interior pile? We will start by designing a typical pile at the East end of the pier. 2) Using the boring logs and soil profile that you developed in earlier assignments, sketch a profile of the pile showing strength and density of the soil layers. 3) How far must the piles be driven in order to resist the structural load with a factor of safety of 2? Neglect group interaction effects.
