[Material Science and Engineering]
Suppose you are evaluating the production of a new material to
design a specific area of the fishing rods that normally suffers
from breakage. Given the above, you propose to build a material
composed of unidirectional fibers (see in Figure) of material A
(EA = 150 GPa; vA = 0.2; pA =
2,000 $/m3) and a matrix of material B (EB = 5 GPa,
vB= 0.4, pB = $500/m3). It should be
noted that for the composite material to be a matrix with fibers,
the matrix must be at least 50% of the material. From preliminary
tests, together with his team, they determine that the minimum
properties of the material should be: Ex = 55 GPa, Ey = 7 GPa and
Gxy = 3.2 GPa. You are asked to design the material and answer the
following:
1) With the manufactured material, carry out a test on the
composite material, which consists of exposing it to a stress state
σx = -4,300 MPa, σy = 1,600 MPa and Txy = -2,000 MPa, calculate the
associated unitary strain tensor. (Emix=77.5 GPa, v=0.3, Gxy=
29.807 GPa)
2) If another member of the team proposes to use another type of
fiber of a material C (Ec = 60 GPa;
vc=0.45; pc = $1,200/m3), this is
because the cost of material C is less than that of material A
(cost of material A and B is 1250/m3). Evaluate your team member's
idea so that the material requirements are met, report its
properties, and determine if if this option is more
convenient.
