1. Treatment implementation investment comparison: PoU treatment vs drilling boreholes: (50 points) Refer to the paper titled "A critical evaluation of two point-of-use water treatment technologies: can they provide water that meets WHO drinking water guidelines?" by Murphy et al (2010) to inform your answers to this question. The paper is posted to Moodle. Let's consider the following scenario. You work for an NGO tasked with the management of $30,000 USD in donations devoted to improving drinking water in villages in rural Uganda. You need to decide if it makes sense to use a PoU treatment approach for water from Lake Victoria over borehole drilling to improve access to safe water. Assume boreholes provide access to deep aquifers that provide safe drinking water. Refer to the tables below to for wells in Uganda information regarding the water quality of Lake Victoria and the costs of drilling borehole 1. First, choose which PoU device would be more appropriate under these circumstances (see Table 1 for relevant water quality parameters): ceramic pot filters or biosand filters. Make your selection and explain your answer in 2-3 sentences. What concerns, if any, do you have about your selected technology, in terms of treatment? b. Next, generate a reasonable cost estimate for your selected PoU device. Provide a price in USD that an NGO could reasonable expect to pay for each device. Explain your calculations and assumptions. Note: do not simply cite an external source; instead, provide a justification that notes labor, materials, and any other costs you believe would be necessary. You may make and use assumptions if they are stated clearly. c. What, if any, additional installation/implementation costs do you expect if your NGO purchases these PoU devices for rural communities? Express this amount as a per-unit cost in USD.
