Question 2 (Mark 20) An ideal Rankine plant involves reheat and regeneration along with a single open feedwater heater, as shown in the Figure below. Because of material-related restrictions, superheated steam enters the turbine at a temperature of 600 °C and is condensed in the condenser at a pressure of 10 kPa. Steam from the HPT is sent back to the boiler for a reheat at a pressure that is 1/4 of the pressure at the inlet with the steam reheated to a temperature equals to that at the inlet of the HPT. Steam is extracted from the LPT at a pressure of 0.4 MPa for the open feedwater heater. As a design criterion, the quality of the steam at the exit of the LPT must not be less than 0.9. Show the cycle on a TS graph (identify all the points of the cycle) and determine: 1. The fraction of steam extracted from the LPT 2. The work produced by the turbine 3. The work consumed in pumps I and II 4. The total heat input to the system 5. The total heat rejected in the condenser 6. The heat saved by employing regeneration 7. The ratio of the input heat the reheat to the total input heat 8. The thermal efficiency of the cycle HPT LPT IE 6 9 Boiler 8 FWH Condenser 3 2 1 Pump 11 Pump
