A 3.20 m long gas chromatographic column containing 0.60 mL of
an immobile liquid stationary phase on a solid support material,
was operated at 105o C with a carrier gas flow rate of 15.0 mL/min.
The column was allowed to equilibrate and it was determined that
under the selected operating conditions that the column had an
average number of theoretical plates of 2500, and that a
non-retained air peak eluted at 30.0 seconds.
The selected operating conditions were used to try and separate
two pharmaceuticals, Alpha-X310 and Beta-Y270, that were recently
developed to treat malaria, particularly in young children. It was
determined that Alpha-X310 eluted in 5.53 min and Beta-Y270 eluted
in 6.07 min.
a) the base widths of the peaks for Alpha-X310 and
Beta-Y270.
b) the fraction of time Beta-Y270 spends in the mobile phase
while passing through the column
c) the resolution between the two peaks. Is baseline resolution
achieved for the separation?
d) how the retention time for compound Beta-Y270 will be
affected by increasing Vs from 0.60 mL to 0.70 mL (assuming that
the non-absorbing air peak emerges at the same time)?
