Question 3 Simple triangular one-hour unit hydrographs of two different catchments [A, B] have been fitted to data and are shown below. 12 m/s UHB UHA 15 m/s 2 hr 6 hr 3 hr 8 hr (a) What is the area of each catchment? [5 marks] (b) Net rainfall of 10 mm in the first hour, 20 mm in the second hour and 10 mm in the third hour falls on catchment A. Calculate the resulting run-off as a function of time. [5 marks] (c) Net rainfall of 15 mm in the first hour, 20 mm in the second hour and 15 mm in the third hour falls on catchment B. Calculate the resulting runoff as a function of time. [5 marks] (d) The rivers flowing out from catchments A and B join together a short distance after they leave the basins. A spatially variable storm with the net rainfalls given above moves across the two catchments, with the rainfall starting an hour later on catchment B than catchment A. Assuming your calculations from parts (b) and (c) are correct, calculate the resulting combined run-off as a function of time. [5 marks] (e) A 10 m by 25 m building is located in catchment B. A few minutes after the start of the third hour (when it is raining 15 mm/hour), what flow rate would be draining off of the roof in litres per second? [5 marks)
