A2 A 0.4m x 0.4m square axially loaded reinforced concrete column is supported on a concrete pad foundation of plan dimensions 6m x 3m. The column carries 2500KN design load. The column is placed at an eccentricity of e = 0.6m and two possible options of the foundation are shown in Figure A2 (a) and Figure A2 (b). (a) If the ultimate ground bearing pressure based upon an elastic analysis is limited to 300kN/m2, check whether the ground can support this pad foundation based the arrangement of Figure A2(a) and Figure A2(b). The self-weight of the pad foundation may be ignored. [14 marks] (b) If the column carries the same design load as described in part (a), and the load is eccentric by 80 mm about one axis of the column cross-section only, use the design chart shown in Figure A2(c) to determine a suitable area of steel compression reinforcement. The concrete characteristic compressive strength fok = 30N/mm2 and the column is symmetrically reinforced with steel of characteristic strength fyk = 500N/mm2. [11 marks]
