The 86Sr/87Sr isotope ratio in wine from different regions of South Africa was measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). A time-of- flight (TOF) mass analyser was used. (a) Describe the plasma-mass analyser interface in ICP-MS and explain why its development was critical for the successful commercialisation of ICP-MS. (b) Calculate the difference in drift time of the 86Srt and 87Sr+ ions in the TOF analyser, given the ion source accelerating potential was 280 V and the flight distance 110 cm. DATA: proton mass = 1.673 x 10-27 kg proton charge = 1.602 x 10-19 C (c) Calculate the resolution required to separate the 86Srt and 87Sr+ ions. State whether this is likely to be achieved in a TOF mass analyser, giving a reason for your answer.
