A steel beam with a span of 7.0 m supports uniformly distributed characteristic permanent (g) and variable (qx) loads as
A steel beam with a span of 7.0 m supports uniformly distributed characteristic permanent (g) and variable (qx) loads as shown in Figure Q2. At its end supports the beam is fully restrained against torsion, its top and bottom flanges are restrained against out-of-plane lateral movement and both flanges are free to rotate on plan. A plaster board ceiling is attached to the underside of the bottom flange. Considering only bending and deflection in each case, use Table 2 in the Design Aids attached to specify the lightest suitable grade s275 steel UKB section for the beam if: (1) The top flange of the beam has full torsional restraint along its length. (ii) The top flange has torsional restraint at mid-span only. (iii) The top flange of the beam has full torsional restraint along its length, but the direction of the loads applied is reversed i.e. the loads act vertically upwards. 6 5 N.B. Clearly explain the criteria used to choose each value obtained from the Table. (C1 = 1.13; Es = 210 x 10 N/mm²) gk = 3.0 kN/m qk = 10.0 kN/m eel Beam 7.0 m
