A rectangular reinforced concrete beam simply supported on two masonry walls 200 mm thick and 6 m effective span (Figure 4). The beam has to carry a distributed permanent action of 12.5 kN/m (including beam self-weight) and variable action of 8 kN/m. The beam is inside the building subject to 1-hour fire resistance and design for 50 years of design life. Use beam breadth=200 mm, beam overall depth=500 mm, concrete cover=35 mm, concrete characteristic strength, fax = 30 N/mm and steel characteristic strength, fra = 500 N/mm². Concrete cubes (Figure 5) are tested in a laboratory to assess the compressive strength of concrete. Assume any missing data. Beam Masonry wall Figure 4: Reinforced concrete beam Figure 5: Concrete cubes a) ) Calculate the tensile reinforcement of a reinforced concrete beam; b) What is the "cube strength"? How this is calculated? What are the typical dimensions of the cubes? (max 150 words); What is the correlation with cylinder strength? Which of the two is bigger and why? (max 200 words). c)
