A small research vessel is to be outfitted with a crane to deploy instrumentation and buoy systems over the side (see sketch below). The crane must have the overall dimensions given in the sketch and support a design load of 500 lbs as shown. The project goal is to design the crane minimizing weight, expense and fabrication effon. The upper support has a hole for the vertical portion of the crane to go through. Thus, the upper support can only exert a horizontal (side force) on the vertical portion of the crane. The bottom support can exert both vertical and horizontal force components, but not a moment. Compete a "strength of materials" analysis to demonstrate that there will be no material failure due to yielding or other mechanism. Use a factor of safety of 3 to account for inertial loads generated by vessel motion in waves.
