Compound 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine
Reproduce the molecular structure of your compound showing the
bonds in detail and give its: (i) molecular formula and (ii)
molecular weight. Q2 (a) Consider the generic equilibrium Reproduce
the molecular structure of your compound showing the bonds in
detail and give its: (i) molecular formula and (ii) molecular
weight.
Q2 (a) Consider the generic equilibrium reaction: A + B ⇌ 2C + D
Suppose your compound is a derivative of the reaction product C and
the system is at equilibrium. Describe how the concentrations of
the reactants and the other product change if the concentration of
C is: (i) increased and (ii) decreased (b) Suppose the
equilibrium concentration of the reactants and products in part (a)
are measured and found to be such that: = 0.5[D] and where the
concentrations of A and C are given in the data that appears along
with your compound (A=0.255 and C=3.304). Calculate the equilibrium
constant, K, and state if the equilibrium lies in favour of the
products or reactants. (c) What experimental parameters could
increase the rate at which C is produced in the reaction?
Q3 (a) Assume a hypothetical situation where the pH of an
aqueous solution of a derivative of your compound is measured. The
(analytical) concentration, c0, of the solution and the measured pH
are given in the data that appears along with your compound
(C0=0.495 and pH=1.062). Calculate: (i) [H3O+ ] and (ii) [OH– ].
(b) Calculate the pKa of the derivative of your compound and hence
discuss its acid/base characteristics (i.e. consider whether it is
a strong or weak acid or base).
