Problem No. 3: Two, 24-in standard square threaded power screw with pitch of 0.5 in are used to raise and lower a hydraulic gate weighing 60 tons. An electric motor operates the two screws. The coefficients of collar and thread frictions are 0.03 and 0.14 respectively. Mean diameter of the collar is 4 inches. If the gate rises at the rate of 2 ft/min, determine: a. The rpm of the screws; b. Motor size in HP required to lift the gate if the mechanical efficiency is 85%.
