Breakdown (b) A partially automated sequential production line has a total of six stations, three are automated and three are manual workstations, in its current configuration. Each station is connected by a conveyor transport system with no storage buffers, so when an automated station stops, the whole line stops, including the manual stations. Material conveyor transport time is 6 seconds. Data on the six stations is listed in Table Q2 (b). Station Activity Process Type rate (P2 1 36 sec 15 sec 20 sec 25 sec 54 sec 33 sec Table Q2 (6) time 2 3 4 5 6 د N کا مال نت Manual Automated Automated Automated Manual Manual 0 0.01 0.02 0.01 0 0 Cost of the material conveyor transport is €0.10/minute, cost to run each automated station is €0. 12/minute and labour cost to operate each manual station is €0.17/minute. Proposal 1: It has been proposed to substitute an automated station in place of station 5. The running cost of this station is estimated at €0.25/minute and its breakdown rate (p) is 0.02, but its process time would be only 30 seconds. Proposal 2: Reconfigure the current line to have storage buffers before and after the manual stations. These storage buffers will be of sufficient capacity to allow the manual stations to operate independently of the automated portions of the line. Average downtime per breakdown of the current line, as well as for both proposed configurations, is 3.5 minutes. Determine the following for the current line, Proposal 1 and Proposal 2 configurations: i. Production rate ii. Proportion uptime iii. Cost per unit (neglect material and tooling costs) iv. Comment and compare the three sets of results (9 marks) (6 marks) (6 marks) (4 marks)
