Problem 2 (50): A) A hot-rolled steel bar has yield strength in tension and compression of 500 MPa. Define Maximum shear stress, and Maximum normal stress for the following stress distribution: 0x=200 Mpa and 0y=200 Mpa, and (xy=250 Mpa (All the other stresses are set to zero). B) For the above material and stress distribution, what is the safety factor using distortion energy theory, Maximum Normal stress theory, and maximum shear stress theory. C) Let's assume the problem above is a brittle material with yield for tension equal to 500 Mpa. If the yield for compression for problem above is different and equal to 600 MPa what failure theory do you suggest if we want to have the most accurate failure theory and be less conservative? What is the safety factor for the failure theory that you selected?
