4. (a) List the origin of three different periodic forces that may cause a wind turbine's tower to sway or vibrate. For each of these forces, write a few sentences to briefly explain the nature of the force and how it arises. (b) What determines whether forces outlined in part (a) will have potential to cause troublesome or even destructive vibrations within the structure of the wind turbine? Briefly explain your answer. (c) During design of a new wind turbine, it will frequently become apparent that certain operational situations may give rise to troublesome vibrations of the turbine tower. Explain three key engineering measurements or parameters that you, as chief design engineer, can explore and adjust to reduce or maybe prevent tower vibration becoming a problem. (d) A pendulum regulated grandfather clock is running slow. It is losing 140 seconds every 1 hour. The clock's mechanism is designed such that it requires a precise 2.00 (two) second full swing cycle in order that it keeps exact time. The pendulum arm, for the purpose of this calculation, can be assumed to be weightless. A 460 gram mass towards the lower end of the pendulum arm can have its position precisely adjusted up and down this arm. Calculate how the pendulum should be adjusted to restore the clock to running on time. Show all logical steps of the calculation.
