A steel beam with the cross-section shown in Fig Q1 has to carry
the load w. ESteel = 200GPa.
The allowable stress for the material is πœŽπ‘Žπ‘™π‘™π‘œπ‘€ = 100 π‘€π‘ƒπ‘Ž.
The beam shall be replaced whilst the allowable load shall
be the same.
i) Calculate the flexural rigidity for the arrangement.
ii) Quantify and comment on how the design would need to change
if wood is used as replacement option, with EWood = 15GPa
