Question 2 a) List the two advantages of gas turbine application using the two-stage compressor with an intercooler between the stages. (5 Marks) b) A gas turbine based on Brayton cycle has two stages compressor unit with an intercooler between stages. A turbine is used to drive the High Pressure (HP) and Low Pressure (LP) compressors. The overall pressure ratio is 10 and the compression process is complete. Each compressor has the same pressure ratio and the air temperature that enters LP compressor is 100kPa and 25°C. Air from HP compressor is heated in combustion chamber and temperature rises to 510°C at the turbine entry. Assuming isentropic efficiencies are 0.85 for both compressor stages, and 0.91 for turbine. Neglecting all losses in pressure and assuming change in kinetic energy is negligibly small. i. Sketch the schematic diagram and T-s diagram on the saturation lines. Label the diagram ii. Calculate the total work input for compressors, [kl/kg] Calculate the work output from turbine, (kJ/kg] Calculate the net-work output of the cycle, [kJ/kg] Calculate the thermal efficiency of the cycle For air, use, cpa=1.005 kJ/kg.K and y=1.4, and for gas, use cpg=1.110 kJ/kg.K and y=1.333. (20 Marks) iii. iv. V.
