Question 1 a) Rankine cycle is an ideal cycle of steam power plant. One of the main components in the plant is a condenser. Is it possible to maintain a pressure of 20 kPa in a condenser that is being cooled by river water that entering at 25°C? (5 Marks) b) A steam power plant operates on the reheat Rankine cycle between the pressure limits of 17.5 MPa and 20 kPa. The mass flow rate of steam through the cycles is 22 kg/s. Steam enters both stages of the turbine at 600°C. The moisture content of the steam at the exit of the low-pressure turbine is not to exceed 5.6%. Assume ideal processes and neglecting the feed-pump work. i Sketch and label the schematic diagram of the steam plant. ii. Sketch the cycle on a temperature-entropy (T-s) diagram with respect to saturation lines Calculate the work output for the plant, (kJ/kg). Calculate the rate of heat addition for the plant, [kW). Determine the specific steam consumption, (kg/kWh). vi. Calculate the cycle thermal efficiency, [%]. (Please refer to Table 1: Property Table for the water). (20 Marks) iii. iv. v.
