For this problem set, you are asked to model a closed system and an open system of your choice. Treat this situation as you need to explain your engineering analysis to other engineers who do not know thermodynamics and the control volume analysis. Assume that you do not need to explain math and conservation equations. 1. (20 points) Pick a closed system you would like to model and provide engineering analysis. 2. (20 points) Pick an open system you would like to model and provide engineering anysis. The following are the given statement and requirements for the solution. You need to pick some thermodynamics devices. These thermodynamic devices can be anything that you would like to analyze and can apply control volume analysis with conservation equations. You must explain the concept of the control volume analysis and thermodynamic properties used for the analysis. Merely stating the definitions will not be acceptable. For example, if you use the concept of enthalpy, you must explain its physical meaning, In general, you need to show that you understand thermodynamic properties and the control volume analysis and can apply this concept to any of the thermodynamic systems. Please use actual numbers to carry out the control volume analysis. For example, if you analyze a turbine, you have to search the inlet and outlet thermodynamic conditions and provide references as shown in the examples. Thus, you have to provide initial, final. and/or boundary conditions in numbers with units. Also, you need to provide the result in a number. For example, for a turbine, power output could be the final value you want to report. Provide T-v and/or P-v diagrams would be helpful for certain systems but not necessary Do understand that there is no definitive answer to this problem set. We would like to see whether you can apply control volume analysis to real systems.
