Question 3: Design and Manufacture of Aircraft Wing Cover (20 marks] An aircraft manufacturing company has approached your composite consultancy company because they want to design and manufacture a composite wing cover. The cover is a thin composite skin stiffened with composite stiffeners, to provide sufficient stiffness, strength, and instability resistance. The wing cover is to be manufactured using pre-preg of T700 carbon fibres with E765 resin, with a cured ply thickness of 0.125mm. a) Propose the layup to design the skin [1 mark] b) For a skin of 4mm thick, specify a stacking sequence with reasoning [7 marks] Page 3 of 5 The wing cover comprises skin and T-shaped stiffeners. The customer has asked you to make recommendations on the manufacturing techniques and process of the wing cover. C) Make recommendation on the skin and T-shaped stiffener integration technique of the composite cover (2 marks) and explain/reason your recommendation. [4 marks) d) Either ATL or hand lay-up can be used to layup the skin, make recommendation on one of them for the skin and explain the advantages and disadvantages of your recommendation. [4 marks] e) Based on the manufacturing technique you recommend in c), make recommendation on the NDT techniques for quality check of the manufactured skin/stiffener cover. [4 marks)
