1)A child’s toy consists of a vertical
rod pin jointed at the top and a projectile is thrown at the
rod. The rod has a mass of m=0.50 kg. The projectile
has a mass of 0.51 kg and has a “grabber” on the front such that on
contact with the rod it attaches to the rod without slipping, see
Figure Q1 below.
a) Modelling the projectile
as a point mass calculate the mass moment of inertia of the
rod-grabber assembly about the axis O in Figure
Q1.[4 marks]
b) Calculate the angular
velocity, w2 of the
rod-grabber assembly just after impact.
[7 marks]
c) Calculate the maximum
angle qmax the rod-grabber
assembly makes following the initial impact. Ignore friction
at the pivot in your calculations.
