Congratulations. You have been hired by Biomechanisms, a company designing a prosthetic leg. The goal is a low cost, energy efficient device. You have been assigned to the electronics team designing the interfaces between the foot location systems, the leg processing and the patient's nervous system. The system uses two sensors to guide foot placement: a camera is aimed down and slightly forward and a touch sensitive surface on the foot. A high-level block diagram is shown below. Bio-interface Central Controller Touch Sensor Camera Emergency Switch 1. A team mate comes to you with the design shown below.

10V 2M22 4kΩ 1M2 3k22 = The data sheet for the MOSFET gives the following values: V = 1V and ko=0.5mAV? a. The team mate wants to know what the Q-point is? b. The team mate wants to know if the transistor is in saturation and, if it is not what changes should be made? 2. a. The engineer responsible for the communications links says the link budget for the touch sensitive surface is -3dB at the sensor, -6dB over the link and -3dB at the receiver. How many bits will this system require to achieve OdB? b. The touch sensitive surface outputs a 120kHz signal. The engineers want to sample at 4 times the Nyquist frequency. The bandwidth of the channel is 5 Ms. What is the maximum bit depth each sample can offer? 3. a. The requirements for the controller memory is for a low powered device to store the boot program. What type of memory do you recommend for this task? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this choice? b. A video image must be stored in working memory. What type of memory do you recommend for this task? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this choice?

4. a. Show all elements of the ADC that you would use at the touch sensor to convert the slow analog signals into a bit stream for transmission. b. The designers are concerned that the foot actuator may touch a high voltage source. How would you protect the leg's electronics? c. A enhancement and a depletion NMOSFET is available to use in the switch. Which would you use and why? d. Describe the operation of the selected device as a switch.
