3. (25 points) Rectifiers Consider a three phase, six-thyristor rectifier with the standard topology that we studied in the course. Input voltage is 385V line to line rms at 50 Hertz. The firing angle is 15 degrees and the overlap angle is negligible. The load is highly inductive, drawing a constant 65A DC. a. (8 points) Determine and plot one complete 50Hz cycle of the output voltage (on the dc side). Label minimum and maximum values of voltage and label the time at which each thyristor switches. b. (10 points) Find the power factor (on the ac side). This power factor includes the effect of both displacement and distortion. c. (4 points) Explain why rectifiers with capacitive filters are not normally permitted in products that are sold in Europe. d. (3 points) HVDC. Explain why the bipolar circuit topology for HVDC systems is preferred to the simpler single DC line with a ground return.
