In a study of factors affecting hypnotism, visual analogue scale (VAS) sensory ratings were obtained for 16 subjects. For these sample ratings, the mean is 8.33 while the standard deviation is 1.96 (based on data from “An Analysis of Factors That Contribute to the Efficacy of Hypnotic Analgesia,” by Price and Barber, Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Vol. 96, No. 1). At 0.01 level of significance, test the claim that this sample comes from a population with a mean VAS rating of less than 10.00.
