Problem 2 Discuss the “multiplication principle” and techniques for counting permutations and subsets, using the following examples. For each example, explain how you arrive at the desired number. Let X be the set of upper case english letters, let C CX be the consonants, and let V CX be the vowels. • The number of 5 letter sequences chosen from X. • The number of 5 letter sequences, where all 5 letters are different, chosen from X. • The number of 5 element subsets of X. • The number of 5 letter sequences consisting of 3 elements of C (repetition allowed) followed by 2 elements of V (repetition allowed). • The number of 5 letter sequences consisting of 3 elements of C (repetition allowed) followed by 2 different elements of V. • The number of 5 letter sequences consisting of 3 consonants (repetition allowed) and 2 vowels (repetition allowed) in any order.
