A study compares the statistics anxiety between male and female
students. A questionnaire, ranging from 0 (no anxiety) to 100
(highest level of anxiety), is administered by Dr. He is interested
in whether female students have a higher mean statistics anxiety
than male students. A sample of 9 female students had a mean of
74.7 with a sample standard deviation of 7.2. Dr. also
collected a sample of 14 male students and the raw data for 13
males students are as follows:
67
72
74
65
62
60 70

Assume both populations are approximately normal with equal
variances.
b. Calculate the mean, median and
standard deviation for all the 14 male students, correct to 1
decimal place. (3 points)
c. State the null and alternative
hypotheses in Dr. Cheung’s study. (2 points)
d. Calculate the pooled variance sp2. (3
points)
e. Test whether female students have a
higher mean statistics anxiety than male students at 0.01
significance level. Indicate the degree of freedom in the test
clearly. (6 points)
