Question 3: Researchers wish to investigate the effect of fertiliser on the yield of wheat. Three fertilisers were identified and due to commercial reasons were simply labelled A, B, and C. Ten fields were selected for each fertiliser and wheat sown in each. After a fixed period of time (determined so the wheat was deemed to have fully grown) the fields were harvested and the amount of grain produced (in tonnes) recorded. (a) Write down the statistical model that is appropriate for analysing the effect of fertiliser on wheat yield. Define all symbols. (6) Show the projected ANOVA for this experiment. (c) Write down the statistical hypotheses for this experiment. (d) The data were analysed and the following partially complete ANOVA table was obtained. Source ANOVA Table for Wheat Yield Experiment DF Sums of Mean VR Squares Square Pr>VR Fertiliser 0.0067 Error 1.3906 Total 543773 © Complete the ANOVA table. (m) Indicate the two methods that can be used to calculate Error Degrees of Freedom. (e) Using and referring to the appropriate information from the ANOVA table, test the hypotheses of part (e). Include a plain English conclusion in your answer. (1) The table of mean wheat yields for each fertiliser type is shown below. R Fertiliser Mean Yield N А 4.189 10 M 6.021 10 C 5.019 10 (1) Using the information in the ANOVA table and the table of means, calculate the Leas Significant Difference (LSD) for testing treatment means in this experiment. Show all working (1) Construct a table of mean differences and test which fertiliter means differ using the LSD value you calculated previously. Provide a plain English conclusion
