A topic of ongoing interest is the short and long term health effects of exposure to various agents in the environment. In 1975 a study was published that looked at the effects of chronic exposure to low levels of lead in children who lived near a lead smelter in El Paso, TX. A lead absorption group and a control group of children were identified by the amount of lead in blood samples, and various neurological and psychological tests were preformed to compare the two groups. In particular, the WISC performance TQ test was performed on 14 children, 5 years of age and older, in the lead absorption group and 13 children, 5 years of age and older in the control group. The lead absorption group average IQ was 96.44 With a standard deviation of 13.74. The control group averagelQ was 103.29 with a standard deviation of 17.87. a.
