The 2-km long x 4A m wide runway for the Clark International Airport is underlain by soft saturated normally consolidated clay deposit, overlying a highly stiff clay deposit. The runway section is designed to be elevated by A meters above the existing grade line for drainage (water table is at grade level) and protection against flooding, thus a final embankment having dimensions of 4A m-width on top and 56m- wide base will need to be constructed over the existing soft soil. Based on geotechnical investigation, the properties of soft clay deposit are summarized in Table 1. In order to reach the target schedule, it has been required to check the adequacy of installing MacDrain PVD (see Table 2) as a possible ground improvement technique to address consolidation settlement of the soft clay. For preload, the embankment fill's compacted unit weight (sand & gravel) is estimated to be 18 kN/m².
