In a recent study, respondents were asked their gender and whether or not they were a cigarette smoker. There were three answer choices: Non-smoker, Past smoker, and Current smoker. Suppose we want to test for an association between smoking behaviour (non-smoker, current smoker, or past smoker) and gender (male or female) using a Chi-Square Test of Independence (we'll use a = 0.05). Use the output from SPSS below to determine which statement below is TRUE. Do you smoke cigarettes? Gender Crosstabulation Count Gender Male Female Total 297 149 148 Do you smoke cigarettes? Nonsmoker Past smoker Current smoker 37 13 31 24 37 68 Total 193 209 402 Chi-Square Tests Asymptotic Significance Value df (2-sided) Pearson Chi-Square 3.171 a 2 .205 Likelihood Ratio 3.217 2 .200 Linear-by-Linear - 1.106 1 293 Association N N of Valid Cases 402 a. O cells (0.0%) have expected countless than 5. The minimum expected count is 17.76. O The chi square calculated value is 3.217. O The chi square critical value is 3.171 O There is no relationship between gender and smoking behaviour because the p value (0.205) is greater than a = 0.05. There is a relationship between gender and smoking behaviour because the p value (0.200) is greater than a =0.05.
