McGinn writes about the stages of the organizational life cycle. Put the following stages in order from the first/beginning stage of a new organization to the last/most mature stage of an organization. The Professional Stage: Leadership becomes more business-like and profit oriented; decision-making is allowed closer to the customer. The Matrix Stage: Simultaneously centralized and decentralized; managers report to two or more bosses; decisions are made by those most qualified to make them; flexibility reigns. The Personal Stage: Power transitions from an individual to a management team; product expertise and team loyalty are developed; the organization becomes stable. The Entrepreneurial Stage: new products or services are created with specific competitive advantages. The Bureaucratic Stage: Centralized staff and systems ensure corporate objectives have priority over individual unit goals.
