4. For a heat pump the coefficient of performance, COP, is defined as the ratio between the heat emitted at the hot side, Qout, and the energy Wnet supplied to the compressor. It can be shown that the maximum theoretical COP for a heat pump is given by TH COPideal = TH-TC where Ty is the highest and Tc the lowest temperature in the cycle. In this specific case, a heat pump extracting heat from the outdoor air is assumed to have a practical COP that is about half of the theoretical upper limit (OBS: this cannot always be assumed). Calculate the practical COP for the following two situations. a) The outside air temperature is -20° C and the heat pump delivers hot water with a temperature of 40 °C. b) The outside air temperature is 0º C and the heat pump delivers hot water with a temperature of 40 °C. c) Based on the difference in a) and b), can you guess why heat pumps are more commonly used in southern Sweden (like Skåne) than in the northern parts of Sweden. Answer: a) 2.6 b) 3.9
