For this discussion, let's focus on bowel disorder drugs, in
particular the use of laxatives. Use the following scenario to
answer the questions below.
Scenario:
Margarita Lopez, an 81 year old female patient, was brought to
her primary care provider's office by her daughter after the
patient fainted at home. The patient has a history of hypertension
and hypercholesterolemia for which she is prescribed losartan 50mg
PO daily and atorvastatin 40 mg PO daily. Patient lives with her
daughter and has extended family close by. Patient is allergic to
aspirin.
Most recent vital signs:
Physical Assessment Findings:
Patient is 5'1" and weights 52 kg. Patient is alert and oriented
X2, speech is clear and appropriate. Skin is dry and oral mucosa is
dry, tongue red and swollen. Respirations even and unlabored,
lungs clear throughout. Heart sounds auscultated-rate regular at
94, pulses equal bilaterally on upper and lower extremities. . Hand
grips and foot pushes are equal bilaterally, unsteady gait. Bowel
sounds hyperactive in all 4 quadrants, per patient she has had
watery stools. Upon further questioning- the patient reports no
changes to her diet, but she does take bisacodyl daily so she can
"stay regular." Per patient her urine is dark amber and she hasn't
had to pee in a while.

Treatment Plan:
After evaluating the patients labs and assessment findings the
provider has determined the patient is safe to return home, with
orders to drink plenty of fluids, stop taking the laxatives, and
rest.
You are the nurse providing discharge instructions to the
patient and her daughter.
