3. Click and drag the time measuring device in the simulation window. Make sure the simulation is paused. position the measuring tape along the laser pointer with the left red cross at the margin of a bright wave. Drag the other end of it to cover more than half of the waves (along the horizontal). Click on the Play button in the time measuring device: it should change to the symbol for "paused". Select "Slow. Your simulation window should look like shown below (a different color of light is shown in this image): BD Wave Interference 40 PHET! Click play and follow the front of the bright wave starting from the red cross on the left of the measuring tape until it reaches the red cross on the right side of the measuring tape: click stop. Take a screenshot of your simulation window showing your measurement for distance and time and add at the end of the lab report. Record the time (given in fs), and the distance traveled by light (given in nm) in the table below. Time (fs) Distance (nm) Speed (m/s) 9. Calculate the speed of this light wave in m/s using the measurements from the table. Show your calculations 10. Select the "Slits" icon at the bottom of the simulation window. Then select the laser (the "Light Generator" should show up as the source of the light waves) and from the drop down menu by One slit, select Two Slits. Click on the "Screen" button and keep everything else the same. Push the green button on the Light generator. Your window should look as shown. Use the measuring tape to find the distance from the two slits to the screen. Record all measurements in the table below. PHET 105
L (distance to screen) d (distance between slits) 2. (wavelength green light) 500 m 11. Using the values entered in the table above, find the position of the second bright fringe on the screen. Show your calculations 12. Using the values entered in the table above, find the position of the first dark fringe on the screen Show your calculations 13. By clicking the two slit barrier and dragging it you can change its position. Always allow a few seconds for the simulation to catch up with the changes you are making before analyzing the results. While the simulation is running, bring the two slit barrier closer to the screen (farther away from the source). What happens to the pattern of bright and dark fringes shown on the screen? Explain your answer. 14. Bring the two slit barrier back to approximately half way between the light source and the screen. Allow the simulation to run for a few second. Slowly increase the slit separation (use the sliding button) and observe what happens to the bright and dark fringes pattern on the screen. What do you observe? Explain. 10€
